Pablo Valbuena is an artist who is part of the working group of Medialab Prado Madrid, Light, Space and Perception. In this center developed and showed for first time its augmented sculpture in the context of the Interactivos? 2007 workshops, which later got an honorable mention in Ars Electronica. His work has evolved since then, always from experimenting with light projected onto the city’s architecture. In a more sophisticated version of his artwork Entramado, he has presented in the TodaysArt Festival of Hague (Holland) a series of delicated visual games over the facade of the town council:

Another new concept of projected augmented reality. Ivan Tihienko has designed an interface that projected over the floor would allow the user to check your calendar, send emails, be guided by GPS, listening to music or launch multiplayer games. The motion graphics are quite convincing and the system seems plausible.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

The privacy issues raised by the projection of personal information in a public space would lead to many users to use it only for certain tasks, such as games. It will also be difficult to ensure that the user has a portable projector so powerful to draw a clear picture in daylight and over any surface.

In any case it is an innovative concept that companies working in microprojectors will maybe take into account.

This one or a similar name like Espectror or Ilusionormer could be the names for this fleeting illusions producer, imperceptible to the eye, but permanent in the cameras on its victims.

This is the brilliant idea of Julius von Bismarck, his Fulgurator detects the flash from nearby cameras, projecting an image during milliseconds coinciding with the taking of the photo. The result, unexplained ghostly apparitions in our shots. It is secretive, almost invisible, stealthy and certainly exceptionally intrusive:

“A camera can be used as a personal memory tool, since people do not doubt the veracity of their own photographs. Hence, photos can reproduce the reality of an individual environment or public space. At sacred or popular locations, or those having a political connotation, an intervention with the Fulgurator can be particularly effective. Especially objects with a special aura or great symbolic power are good targets for this kind of manipulation. In other words, with the Fulgurator it is possible to have a lasting effect on those kinds of individual moments and events that become accessible to the masses only because they are preserved photographically.”

All artists want to intervene in one way or another in the eyes of the others, revealing the strangeness or empathy with a previously unknown object, so a tool capable of doing so as efficiently and disconcerting, it can only get my admiration.

Of note is the military and guerrilla paraphernalia that surrounds the device itself, in line with his speech. The briefcase that houses it and its coupling recreate the piece at a time immediately prior to the performance of symbolic counter-fighter. As a final touch, Julius makes his own appearance like El Che, his outstretched arm holding the gun and the logo with a revolutionary inspiration.

I firmly believe that this aesthetic rifle is able to change the perception of our culture beyond the arts field, maybe being taken over by the market for mass distribution in stores for jokes and in cereal boxes, globalizing this stealth intervention in our photos. Then we will often identify the surprised gestures that we can see in the Julius video when being in a touristic place, realizing that other people around us is also comparing their photos with the original. We’ll conclude that in front of us there are some hidden meanings, feeling the temptation of taking our camera and distill them.

Update 27/06: Julius has edited today the porject’s web: ‘pending of patent’ …
