We are starting to see some interesting applications of the acoustic vision concept (or augmented sound reality) like this CASBLIP project from the Polytechnic University of Valencia:

The CASBLIP project is a development platform financed by the European Union to aid the navigation of the blind and people with visual dishabilities. A large group of experts in different areas have analyzed and developed a set of 4 tools.

The main tools of CASBLIP are called M1 and M2, they integrate data acquisition systems and its 3D representation positioned in space, so the system can represent 3D sound readings of a linear distance measure (M1), and the possibility of incorporating stereoscopic analysis systems for detecting obstacles and hallways (in M2); and on the other hand, the third tool is based in the analysis and use of complementary systems as GPS. The latest tool is an improvement of vision in persons with different types of residual vision.

The entire M1 and M2 system is at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, at its Center for Research in Graphics Technology and aims to be the basis for developing specific tools for blind people and other visual dishabilities.

Mac Funamizuha published in his blog a serie of ideas apliying some augmented reality notions and “skipping all the difficulties that tech people would point out”. It seems to use a transparent? tablet PC and a maglite as inspirational devices (click on the images to get to the corresponding article):

Indoor navegation:

Exploring city services floor by floor:

Small objets could also be analised:

Although the most interesting is the application of projected augmented reality. This is a new AR type I have not submitted to the blog, which I’ll resolve in the next post. But for the moment:

This is not a pure AR interface, but still using motion tracking and mapping (Reminds me another interactive art projects wich i’ll get to find later).

A year ago some media like Lifehacker, Planeta Mac or Digg posted about MarcoPolo, an application for Mac that allows you to automate many tasks depending of where you are and what are you doing, so, your context.

Such applications fall under the context-aware discipline, also linked with ambient intelligence, ubiquitous computing and ultimately with everything that is able to improve the sensitivity and connectivity of your computer with its physical environment to better adapt to the user.

With the latest version of MarcoPolo we can get things like:

Establish our state on messenger as “at home” inmmediately after we open the computer there…

Turn on the radio when we wake up.

Cause the computer to surprise a friend when he approaches to you (if he carries on in his pocket a bluetooth enabled phone).

Improve or extend the sensitivity of the computer is also the goal of many artists who pursue new methods of interaction with the spectators. MarcoPolo’s contribution is to extend the basic methods of our computer without the need to incorporate the usual microntrollers that artists use in almost any type of interactive installation.
